Quang Ninh province seeks to become coastal economic hub in Asia

QUẢNG NINH, Vietnam – According to a study on the province’s strategic development provided by the local authorities, the northern province of Quảng Ninh has set an ambition to become Vietnam’s top ocean-economic hub in the future.

The most dynamic combination of factors that might make Quảng Ninh one of the leading forces in transportation, shipbuilding, tourism, and aquaculture exists among Vietnam’s several coastal provinces.

To expand the deep-water Con Ong Hòn Nét Port Project in Cẩm Phả City, the province has been in discussions with potential investors. Other infrastructure improvements supported the establishment of the Coastal Economic Zone Quảng Yên, which was approved by the Prime Minister’s Office in September 2020 and will act as a significant economic and development driver for the province in the future. These improvements included the Vân Đồn-Móng Cái Highway, the Hạ Long-Cẩm Phả Highway, and the Quảng Yên-Đông Triều Highway.

Quảng Ninh’s strategic development goal, according to Nguyễn Tường Văn, chairman of the province’s People Committee, is to “make the province into the country’s leading coastal economic hub, the gateway to the Red River Delta, and a major tourism centre with connections to regional and international popular tourism spots by sea.”

According to Văn, the province will work closely with investors from the private sector to construct coastal economic and commercial zones and encourages them to do so.
